SPICMACAY – Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth plans to organise around 100 events in Chennai and other cities of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry during the VIRASAT festival in schools and colleges. The events include modules like, Classical Music concerts – both Carnatic and Hindustani, classical dance, Folk performances, craft, workshops, talks and classical cinema.
VIRASAT 2011 series of events in Chennai was inaugurated on the 19th of October at IIT Madras with a grand santoor concert by Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.
Ustad Jamil Khan Manganiyar & Group
Ustad Jamil Khan Manganiyar & Group, a well known Rajasthani Folk & Sufi Music group will be performing in different educational institutions in Chennai from Sunday 6th Nov 2011 to Friday 11th Nov 2011. The group consists of 6 musicians led by Ustad Jamil Khan Manganiyar and 1 lady Kalbeliya dancer.
They will perform meera and kabir bhajans in Rajasthani folk music, Sufi songs and other popular Rajasthani traditional folk songs with traditional folk instruments. The Kalbeliya dancer will perform 2-3 pieces. The duration of the concert will be 1 hour.
SPICMACAY organises events only in educational institutions. Its events are for students and the youth. All SPICMACAY prgms are free. There are no tickets or passes. However entry will be allowed to the general pubic on a first come first serve basis depending on availability of space.

From 19th October onwards till the end of December 2011, SPICMACAY is organising around 100 events in Chennai and other cities in Tamilnadu and Pondy in educational institutions for VIRASAT 2011. Other concerts of carnatic music, classical dance, classical film shows, handicraft workshops and lectures are planned in Nov 2011 and Dec 2011 for the Virasat Series in educational institutions.
Under the world heritage series, we will have a Jazz trio from Norway - Arild Andersen Trio performing in institutions in Chennai and Pondy in the last week of November 2011.
SPICMACAY Chennai volunteers group meets every Saturday at the Humanities and Sciences Dept of IIT Madras from 3pm to 5pm. Please join us in this voluntary movement to spread awareness of India’s rich cultural heritage amongst the youth.
